Educators hope new water fountains mean healthier choices

GLENVILLE, Minn. – Students at Glenville-Emmons Public Schools may not appreciate their new drinking fountains, but educators do.
The school district installed four new water fountains and water bottle filling stations, two at the high school and two at the elementary school. They were paid for through a grant worth up to $8,000 from the Statewide Health Improvement Project (SHIP).
The water bottle refill station tells users how many plastic bottles have been kept out of landfills by using it.
Educators hope it promotes healthy choices for the students, who are allowed to bring clear reusable bottles to school.
“The more water the kids drink, instead of the sugary and energy drinks and the soft drinks, that’s definitely more healthy for them,” said Glenville-Emmons Principal Jeff Tietje. “Then there’s the reduction of plastic bottles.”
He said the healthy choices will hopefully be made by teachers as well.
“Any business will tell you, the less sick days you have, the more productivity you have,” Tietje said. “The same thing goes in education. The more your teachers are here, you don’t have to find subs and put the subs in the room, the better education your students get.”
Through the grant, the district was a
lso able to purchase a healthy snack station, which will have refrigerators with healthy food in them for students to buy. Tietje said they have the refrigerators at the school and are ready to be installed. He anticipates they will be ready for use in the next couple of weeks.
